Verbal Reasoning Trainer

Kent Test style verbal reasoning, the kind of word puzzles that come up in the 11+. Each round mixes six question types. You will get instant feedback and an explanation for every one.

What is verbal reasoning? (a quick guide for parents)

Verbal reasoning tests how well a child can think with words and spot patterns in language. It is not about how much they already know, but how they work things out. The Kent Test uses it because it is a fair way to see how a child reasons.

This trainer covers the six most common types:

  • Letter sequences: work out the pattern and find the next letters.
  • Letter codes: each letter shifts a fixed number of places to make a secret code.
  • Hidden words: a short word is hiding where two words meet.
  • Odd one out: four words go together; one does not.
  • Word analogies: finish the pair, e.g. kitten is to cat as puppy is to dog.
  • Compound words: join two small words to make a bigger one.

The best practice is little and often. Five minutes a day beats an hour once a week.
