Start with a number, then follow the chain in your head: times 2... minus 5... halve it... What are you left with? No pencils allowed! The chains get longer as you go, and you have three lives.
Chains train two things at once: arithmetic and working memory, the ability to hold a number in your head while doing something to it. That combination is exactly what multi-step 11+ word problems demand. Teachers play this as a warm-up game in class for good reason.
